Workshop Description

Master the fundamentals of oil painting with a focus on tone and proportion in portraiture. In this introductory course, you will be provided with everything you need to create convincing, three dimensional black and white representations of people. By the end of this one-day workshop you’ll not only create a stunning black and white portrait but also gain invaluable insights into the fundamental techniques and concepts of oil painting. This is perfect for beginners or those wishing to improve their understanding and ability in accurately representing three dimensional forms. By the end of the day you’ll proudly take home your masterpiece and the knowledge of how to make similarly impressive portraits in the future. We cover the properties of oil paint, the role of tone without colour, the use of mediums to extend paint and triangulation to support accurate dimensions in your portraits. On the day of the workshop, you’ll be warmly greeted as you arrive, followed by a fun warm up activity to get your creative juices flowing. We’ll familiarise ourselves with the studio, bathroom and kitchen facilities and select our lunches, catering to all dietary requirements. A delicious lunch along with light refreshments are included in the price of booking. Once everyone is comfortable, I will provide a thorough explanation and demonstration of the materials, tools and processes ensuring everyone feels confident to proceed safely with their own artmaking. With all materials supplied, including a primed support, oil paints, brushes, medium, and reference images, you’ll have all the necessary tools to develop the techniques required to unleash your creativity. The workshop takes place in my studio in Geelong from 9am until approximately 3pm. Off-street parking is available behind the studio. Further details about the location and logistics for the day will be provided upon booking. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
