Intro to Oil Painting - Portraiture

Workshop Description

Master the fundamentals of oil painting through the art of portraiture. In this introductory course, you will be provided with everything you need to delve into the captivating world of portraiture. Throughout the two-day course, you’ll not only create a stunning portrait but also gain invaluable insights into fundamental techniques and concepts of oil painting. By the end of the second session, you’ll proudly take home your masterpiece, equipped with a basic understanding of colour theory, the properties of oil paints, using mediums to enhance your work, triangulation for accurate proportions, and layering techniques to add depth and dimension to your portraits. On the day of the course, you’ll be warmly greeted as you arrive, followed by a fun warm up activity to get your creative juices flowing. We’ll familiarise ourselves with the studio, bathroom and kitchen facilities and select our lunches, catering to all dietary requirements. A delicious lunch along with light refreshments are provided on each day of the course. Once everyone is comfortable, I will provide a thorough explanation and demonstration of all materials, tools, and processes ensuring everyone feels confident to proceed safely into their own artmaking. With all materials supplied, including a primed support, oil paints, brushes, medium and reference images, you’ll have all the necessary tools to develop the techniques required to unleash your creativity. The course takes place over two consecutive Saturdays at my studio in Geelong. Each day will run from 9am until approximately 3pm. Off-street parking is available behind the studio. Further details about the location and logistics for the day will be provided upon booking. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
